| This fine old ART DECO ERA tonic is unique for two reasons. It contained CAFFEINE and SACCHARIN. Of course, the real burst of energy came from the caffeine, not from the vitamins or herbs! The history of saccharin is interesting. The oldest of the artificial sweeteners, it was discovered accidentally in 1879 by researchers at JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY. Ira Remsen and his research fellow, Constantin Fahlberg, were working with coal tar derivatives(toluene). They did not wash their hands very well (at all, maybe?) before eating, and tasted the sweetness on their hands! ~YIKES!~ Although saccharin was commercialized not long after its discovery, it did not become popular until sugar rationing during World War I. Now, back to this old tonic. It is unopened, and is 8.5" tall. THE GRANVILLE CLASS LABORATORY was located in DAYTON, OHIO. This bottle was discovered in DAFFLER'S SODA FOUNTAIN DRUG STORE after it closed about 10 years ago. Contents are sold only for collector purposes and must not be used in any way. | |||||
