Outstanding Porcelain LEECH JAR From Old Drug Store!
Rarely do authentic, pristine leech jars appear on the market. Rarer still does one come with PROVENANCE. This wonderful COUNTER DISPLAY LEECH JAR is from an old drug store in Erie, Pennsylvania. About 12 years ago we were contacted by an elderly pharmacist who had recently closed his 100 year old drug store. As a result of this contact, we were able to acquire this outstanding leech jar. Along with the leech jar came the history of the pharmacy. The original druggist had moved from Cleveland, Ohio to Erie, Pennsylvania in 1895 with big plans on starting a drug store. This leech jar made the trip with him. The drug store was a success! It was in business for about 100 years. This leech jar sat on the shelf of the old drug store in Erie, in the same place, during all those years. It was proudly displayed behind the counter. The pharmacist would dispense leeches directly from this counter jar into little glass leech carriers. The shelf was about six feet from the floor. The jar managed to survive in marvelous condition. We will provide a more complete history, which will include the names of the druggists and drug store, to the new owner. This jar, made of fine porcelain, was imported from Germany for the American market. It is 7.5" tall to the end of the lid knob, and is 4" in diameter. There are no chips, cracks or crazing. This jar is in original, pristine condition. The well-known company PETER VAN SCHAAK & SONS, of CHICAGO, ILLINOIS was the largest American supplier of this type leech jar in the 1890's. The bottom is marked GERMANY. Notice the unglazed bottom, perfect for kiln firing. A production number "19" is noted on the inside rim. This jar contains three knobs, or sting ties, to secure the lid. It also has air holes, so the little critters could breathe! This rare leech jar will certainly be the centerpiece of any medical/pharmacy collection.
